Youth Events for 2011

All Contests are open for ages 9-20 • Register on your Multi-specie Form!

Poster Contest

Create a poster promoting NELE and all it stands for (e.g. Connecting Maine farmers to buyers, educating youth, informing the public about agriculture). Take a look at the website (northeastlivestockexpo.com) for more ideas.

One poster from each age division will compete for overall. The overall winning poster will be used for 2010 Expo promotion! All posters must be turned into the Expo Livestock Office by noon Saturday May 21, 2011 Judging will take place on Saturday at 12:30 pm.

Guidelines

  • All posters must be 14" X 22"
  • Computer Graphics are Allowed, but NO copywrited material can be used.
  • Must promote all aspects of the Expo
  • Only one poster per youths
  • No 3-dimensional posters

Scoring Breakdown

  • Promotion of the Expo: 25 points
  • Creativity: 10 points
  • Originality: 5 points
  • Overall Presentation: 10 points
  • Total:50 points

Photo Contest

Judging will be in two categories

  • 1. Standard agricultural photo
  • 2. Humorous agricultural photo

Guidelines

  • All photos must be 5x7 size and in a mat for display
  • There is a $5.00 entry fee with a limit of 2.
  • Photos must have been taken by the entrant!!

Sales & Marketing Contest

The Sale & Marketing Contest is a project to feature your product/commodity, (this can include your animal!) a means to market it and the reason for doing so. Please use facts to back up your reasoning.

  • Marketing will be judged by a score of 40% visual display and presentation, 40% on verbal display and presentation, and 20% on subject matter and correct information.
  • Please list any sources used to substantiate your project facts.
  • Displays must be set up no later than 6 pm Friday evening and remain in place until after the youth corral on Sunday.
  • Judging will be done at 11:00 AM on Saturday. All participants must be present with their projects.

Youth Cook-Off

Try your hand at cooking!

Groups of 2-4 Youth will be teamed together to make a complete meal (choice of beef, lamb or goat) using Yogurt for a panel of judges.Contest will be limited to the first 20 teams that enter. One adult supervisor per team needs to be there for safety precautions (i.e. lighting grill), and can not assist in preparing food.

Regulations…

  • Anything that needs to be cooked must be done on grill.
  • Youth must as a group present dish to judges and give explanation of their dish and be prepared to answer questions.
  • All meats must begin contest raw and not come marinated. Refrigeration will be provided.
  • Youth must bring everything they will need to prepare dish, including grill. No open fires or dug pits will be permitted.
  • All preparation including cutting may not be done prior to the start of competition.
  • No alcoholic beverages may be used in the recipe, presentation or be served to the judges. (Exception: Cooking wine that may be used in marinating or meat preparation)
  • Yogurt must be included in the main dish and not used as a side dish.

Judging Breakdown:

Score cards will be given to judges. Winners will be determined by the following breakdown:

  • Creativity: 10 points
  • Teamwork: 20 points
  • Taste: 25 points
  • Presentation of food: 20 points
  • Use of Product: 25 points

Youth Fitting Contest

The objective of the contest is to gain the ability to work with a team to enhance the show ring performance of the groomed animal.

TEAM FITTING COMPETITION GUIDELINES

 

  1. Each team will consist of four individuals made up by the youth fitting committee.
  2. The youth fitting committee will provide the animals.
  3. Each team must provide their own fitting equipment. A show halter will be required to present the animal to the judge(s). Once the contest begins, no team member may leave the area and no additional equipment may be brought into the fitting area.
  4. Chutes will be solicited and assembled in the fitting area by the fitting committee.
  5. Once the fitting area is designated for each team by the contest officials, the team may set up their supplies in their designated area. These items should be in place at least 5 minutes prior to the announced starting time of the contest.
  6. Each team will be allowed 45 minutes to fit their animal.
  7. All fitting and grooming techniques must be within accepted practices determined by the fitting committee.
  8. Once the animal has been groomed and time is called, the team will stand at the head of the animal until the judges get to them to review their animal. When the judges arrive, the animal needs to be taken out of the chute and presented by the team. Judges will be encouraged to ask one question per team member at this time. Each team member must answer one question.
  9. Points will be awarded as follows:
    • Ability to fit: 25 points
    • Organization of supplies & equipment: 5 points
    • Participation of each team member: 10 points
    • Overall effect: 5 points
    • Knowledge & Response to Questions: 5 points
    • TOTAL: 50 points
  10. Judging will be based on 50 points maximum. Each judge shall total their score and rank the contestants in numerical order on the basis of their score. (Highest score first, lowest score last.)

Mentor Program

All youth wanting to participate in the mentor program must sign up on the Multi Species Entry Forms by the May 1, 2011 deadline. There will be a meeting immediately following the heifer show on Friday Night, 8pm in the NELE Office. You will meet your partner and receive your guidelines at this time.
