Fiber Arts Area Information
"What do you do with Alpacas?
This is a fiber-bearing livestock whose fleece has been prized for centuries for its softness, strength, and durability. Like most fiber-bearing animals, different grades of fiber are found within one fleece, so professionals will sort the fiber according to color, length and fineness (grade) in order to put it to its highest and best use.
Pam Harwood of Longwoods Alpaca Farm has recently finished her 2-year apprenticeship to become certified as a fiber sorter. She will demonstrate how it is done on Sunday, May 23rd at 11:00 and 2:00, and will have products made with both sorted and unsorted fiber on display all day Sunday."
